Transfer failed or reversed: what it means and what to do

Short answer

A transfer may fail or be reversed if the receiving bank rejects it or required checks are not completed. Most issues can be resolved quickly once the cause is identified.

What “failed” means

A transfer is marked Failed when it cannot be completed before funds are released to the receiving bank.

Common reasons include:

  • Incorrect or incomplete beneficiary bank details
  • Invalid account number or bank code
  • Unsupported account type at the receiving bank
  • Compliance or verification requirements not met

What “reversed” means

A transfer is marked Reversed when funds were sent to the receiving bank but returned.

This may happen if:

  • The beneficiary bank rejects the transfer
  • The beneficiary account is closed or restricted
  • The beneficiary name does not match bank records
  • Additional bank-side compliance checks fail

What to do if your transfer fails or is reversed

  1. Check the transfer status and any notes in your dashboard
  2. Review beneficiary details for accuracy
  3. Update the beneficiary information if required
  4. Wait for funds to be returned to your NGN wallet (if applicable)

How long refunds take

  • Failed transfers are typically returned quickly
  • Reversed transfers may take additional time depending on the receiving bank
  • You will be notified once funds are available

Important

Oneremit cannot override a receiving bank’s decision once a transfer has been rejected or returned.
